Flora i fauna
Tavertet is situated on the sedimentary
cliffs of Tavertet, some of which are more than 200m high.
The spectacular cliff formation is formed by a lower reddish
rock topped by a whitish rock of marine formation where many
fossils are found. Geologists call this the 'Limestone formation
of Tavertet'.
Considered an area of extraordinary
beauty there are cliffs, caves and over-hanging slabs of rock
crossed by streams and waterfalls. The cave called 'El Forat
del Vent' or el 'Serrat del Vent' is 3,216 metres long, one
of the longest of its kind.
The wildlife is shy and can only
be observed by the patient and knowledgeable. Around L'Avenc
one is often lucky enough to spot, a squirrel, badger, fox
or wild boar, to hear a owl or goldfinch, watch a vulture
circle or a sparrow-hawk swoop. It is therefore essential
to keep as quiet as possible and to respect the freedom of
these wonderful creatures in their natural surroundings.
On damp or rainy days you may
see a salamander or a toad on the roads and paths, careful
not to harm them when driving, they need time to get out the
way!
Vegetation is abundant with compact
forests of oak, holm oak, beech and pine. There are also chestnut
trees, hazel trees, poplars, maples, elders, and silver birch
accompanied by a great number of bushes such as gorse, box-trees,
broom and blackthorn, among others. There are dozens of tiny
plants and herbs making up the more than 400 species of flowers
and plants found in The Collsacabra.
