What is l'Avenc?
L’Avenc de Tavertet is a business initiative concerned with the protection of and respect for the environment. We therefore opted for traditional building materials and skills when restoring the house, the use of renewable energy for heating, hot water and electricity for the house and cottages, an active interest in acquiring and using fair trade, local and organic products, and a sustainable management of water and electricity. Above all we would like people to think carefully about animal welfare and are open and deeply respectful to options such as veganism, vegetarianism or simply eating less meat. Our cows and calves are free-range and well-treated. L’Avenc de Tavertet is aimed at being a working example of sustainable tourism.
L’Avenc is tourism: We have 3 self-catering cottages or “masoveries” for 4 people (Susqueda can be split into two cottages for 2 people each). The fact that they are self-catering means that we don’t serve food. There are many restaurants and shops nearby, and if necessary, we can welcome you with a basket of food of your choice (see welcome packs).
L’Avenc is Nature: When staying at l’Avenc you couldn’t be closer to Nature. You may hear an owl screeching on a full-moon night, spot the flight of a falcon or hear a red-billed chough, you may smell the moist grass beneath your feet in springtime as you contemplate the Great Bear on a moonless night. Staying at l’Avenc is getting away from it all as you sit beneath an evergreen oak and breathe in the fresh mountain air.
L’Avenc is protection: We aim to protect both the historical and natural heritage of this little corner of Catalunya. L’Avenc is concerned that Catalans and people from all over the world should be able to continue to enjoy the landscape, flora and fauna as well as the listed house of L’Avenc and its history for many generations to come. The Public interest division Obra Social of La Caixa de Catalunya have acquired 250 hectares of land and we have signed a stewardship agreement, as co-owners, to manage the area with the aim to protect and preserve the resulting area of over 300 hectares called : Els Cingles de l’Avenc de Tavertet. (See Management Plan)
